Project context
The engine was stripped down, cleaned, inspected and overhauled in a workshop in Papeete, following the OEM workshop manual. It was prepared to replace the vessel’s port forward main engine, MPE 4.
Components renewed
- Crankshaft main bearings, connecting-rod big-end bearings and camshaft bearings
- Pistons complete with rings and pins, and cylinder liners
- High-pressure and low-pressure fuel pumps
- Turbochargers, seals and gaskets
Cylinder heads and injectors
Cylinder heads and injectors were utilised from another engine. Before fitting, the heads were disassembled and inspected, the valves were lapped, and the heads were reassembled and pressure tested.
Documented assembly checks
The assembly report records component measurements, fits and clearances throughout the rebuild:
- Crankcase main-bearing bores, bearing-cap fits, crankshaft journal dimensions and main-bearing clearances
- Cylinder-liner fits and bores, piston measurements, connecting-rod bores, and big-end and small-end clearances
- Camshaft bearing dimensions and clearances, gear-train backlash and axial clearances, and free-end gearcase bearing fit
Workshop start-up and sea trials
An initial engine start-up was carried out in the workshop before installation in the vessel’s port forward position. Sea trials were carried out following the OEM running procedure. Eight recorded operating points covered engine speeds from 612 to 1,960 rpm, with zero ECU failure codes recorded at those readings. The trial sheets document fuel, lubrication and cooling-system pressures and temperatures, turbocharger speeds and exhaust temperatures.
